4th grade - American Heroes
Fourth graders continue to explore the idea of whether the actions of heroes are consistent over time. This week, we focused on the question, "How do tragic events affect both the time that they happen as well as the future?" Since TAG for 4th grade fell on September 11, students learned about the events of that day in 2001, with a focus on the actions of heroes on that day. We looked at responses from many of you as to where you were on that day and what your thoughts were. Students participated in a Visible Thinking Routine called "CSI-Color-Symbol-Image" to show their feelings about 9/11. These were very powerful.
5th grade - Pioneers of the 20th Century
Students were given a choice of two problems to solve. One was the decrease in the shark population due to shark finning. The other was the decrease in the manatee population due to human interference. Two groups choose to solve the manatee problem, while one group choose to solve the shark problem. The students went through the steps of creative problem-solving: 1) Brainstorm facts, 2) Brainstorm questions you still have, 3) Brainstorm problems, 4) Choose the main problem, 5) Brainstorm solutions to the problem, 6) Select the five best solutions, 7) Using a decision-making matrix and criteria, determine the best solution, 7) Design a way to implement that solution.
