Fifth Grade News The students performed an experiment to determine which type of handwashing was the best. The methods used were water alone, hand sanitizer, regular bar soap, antibacterial liquid soap, and nothing at all. After washing their hands using a particular method, they swabbed beets. You can see the growth on the beets HERE The results may change the way you clean your hands! Students have hypothesized where the germiest place is in the school. They swabbed that area and then swabbed a petri dish with agar. Already things are starting to grow in those petri dishes. Get ready for some really gross photos. Students are following the spread of influenza across the United States. All of the TAG 5th graders are working with a teammate to come up with a Plan of Action to prevent a flu epidemic in our New Prospect community. Stay tuned for more details. | Fourth Grade News The students are having an eye-opening experience in TAG Town. Now that they had jobs, families, and a place to live, this past week was the time to buy the next "necssity" - FOOD. The students went shopping for groceries using the weekly flyers from several stores in the area. I wish you could have been a fly on the wall as they talked of how much food cost, how much work it was to decide what to buy, and how they never wanted to be responsible for buying groceries! Hopefully, there were some rich discussions at home about this. Once they had their groceries, I asked them to design a 7-day, 3-meal-a-day plan for their family based on those groceries. The results were so funny !!! In December, we talked about charitable giving. The students have decided that they want to make a difference by helping a charity. After going through a decision-making process, the top two charities were Angels Among Us (animals) and North Fulton Community Charities (people). The students took sides and debated. The statement that seemed to make the final tip of the scale was, "If we help people get back on their feet again, maybe they will be able to adopt pets." Stay tuned for the Action Plan that the students will create to help others. |
