Congratulations to Anne, 4th grade recipient of the Ham Award.
While 4th graders were in TAG this week, I was a student myself, learning at the GA Educational Technology Conference. Some of the activities the students were involved with during my absence included: Discussing the pros and cons of lowering the voting age. They also cast a ballot for president, but I haven't counted them yet. I'm going to make you wait until next Wednesday to learn the results (sound familiar?) The students were tasked with selecting six model citizens to make up the first community on Mars. They were to choose from individuals of the past whose characteristics made them leaders of their time. What type of characteristics do you think would be necessary for the first settlers on a new planet to possess? Check out the "Nearpod" presentation the students used today to prepare themselves for designing a Martian colony. (Just sign in with your first name.) One of the new tools I learned about at the GA Educational Technology Conference is EduPuzzle. Watch the movie with your child(ren) before Thanksgiving. Enjoy. |
Congratulations to Katelyn, 5th grade recipient of the Ham Award. Ask your child what we do when someone gets the Ham Award.
The students weren't too excited to find that their stock market portfolios were still "in the red". The good thing is that they realized that much of their loss was due to commission fees for buying and selling. Hopefully, over the next week, they will start to see growth. We had a very interesting discussion about what will happen to the stock market, depending on who is elected - both in the short-term and in the long-term. If you're interested in having discussions with your child about mergers, there are several interesting articles about the Time-Warner/ATT merger in our Google classroom. The students were invited to cast a secret ballot for one of three candidates (Trump, Clinton, Johnson). After giving the students the one or two sentence summary of each political party's belief, the student voting results were: Gary Johnson 50%, Hillary Clinton, 38%, and Donald Trump 12%. I then told the students that Gary Johnson was in favor of legalizing marijuana. They were shocked! The kids asked if they could re-vote. After explaining that once a vote is cast, it's binding, I told them that this same situation was happening in the real world with some people who early voted for one candidate before news came out that would have caused them to vote for another candidate. |
