Brandon G in 5th grade
Kyle W in 4th grade
Congratulations, boys.
In 5th grade TAG this week, students became experts on six types of investing: collectibles, stocks, mutual funds, C.D.'s, bonds, and savings accounts. You can see their group presentations: http://viewpure.com/_8AhGlo8AGc?ref=bkmk Presentations like this are not only to demonstrate what students have learned, but to also build up their skills in presenting information to others. Oh, the Places You'll Go ! I have been selected to be a member of the NASA Social Media Team to cover the launch of OSIRIS-REx next week. In addition to being on the front row for the launch, I will have two days behind-the-scenes touring NASA facilities and meeting with scientists, engineers, and astronauts. I will be tweeting for the two days I am there, posting photos, videos, and information. I hope that you will be able to follow me on September 7 and 8. The easiest way to access my Twitter feed (@searcytag) is to go to my website: searcytag.weebly.com where the Twitter feed appears on the home page. Additionally, I will be in the audience for the press briefing from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday Hopefully, I will have the chance to ask some questions crafted by my 4th grade TAG students. You can watch this event live as well as a presentation from 1:00 - 2:00, "Uncovering the Secrest of Asteroids." Both of these will be broadcast on NASA-TV which you can access online at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html#public. The launch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, September 8. You can view this on NASA-TV or at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html#public. Just a little bit about this mission: The OSIRIX-REx spacecraft is travling to Asteroid Bennu (over 200 million miles from Earth). It will spend two years chasing Bennu down, finally rendevouzing in August of 2018. OSIRIS-REx will then study the asteroid from orbit for another two years before grabbing at least 2.1 ounces of surface material in July 2020. In 2023, this relatively hefty sample should make it back to Earth where researchers in labs around the globe will analyze the material in a number of ways. SO, if a student is in fifth grade this year, they will be seniors when the samples from Bennu return to Earth. For me, personally, this is a very exciting opportunity to be named again to the NASA Social Media Team. I was part of the NASA Social Media Team in December 2014 for the maiden launch of Orion. | In 4th grade TAG this week, students became experts on the OSIRIS-REx mission to an asteroid. They crafted 33 questions about this mission to ask experts at NASA. Students also began researching various components of our solar system. They are learning to use systemic procedures for recording and organizing information. Target / Donors Choose Grant Funded Target has partnered with Donors Choose to fund projects created by students to encourage healthy lifestyles. Target funded OUR 5th grader's idea, and we are expecting 22 under-the-desk cycling devices to arrive this week. There is even one for me! |
